before March 31 even if they still have months to go in a bid to delay the charge for another year.

Renewing before the April cut-off means many drivers will not be liable for any VED rates until February or March 2026.

John Wilmot, CEO and founder of car leasing deals site stressed renewing car tax early was a “no-brainer”.

He said: “While the introduction of VED for electric cars was expected, many drivers may not realise they can in fact delay these charges for another year by renewing their tax before 1 April.

DON’T MISS [COMMENT]

“Taking advantage of this short window to secure another year of tax-free driving is a no-brainer. It’s a simple step that could save you nearly £200, and with the deadline fast approaching, we’d encourage drivers to act now.”

Motorists can tax their car or motorcycle online in minutes using a reference number found on a vehicle tax reminder letter or V5C form.

Road users can also re-tax their vehicle by calling the DVLA vehicle tax service dedicated number or at the Post Office.

However, motorists must remember that taxing a vehicle early means they will need to renew earlier next year.

Changing renewal dates from the Autumn or Winter to March could be forgotten by road users and leave them liable to miss tax renewal next year with devastating consequences.

Martin Lewis has also encouraged motorists to take advantage of the rule to save hundreds of pounds.

Martin said: “Now the crucial thing of this is, you can re-tax at any time, even if you only did it two months ago. You can do it again now. You have to pay each time, but it’s currently free so there’s nothing to pay.

“So effectively this is a loophole that says, just go and do your retaxing as near to that deadline as possible and you get an extra year for free.”
