From sweet chilli to brie and cranberry: Brits reveal their unique pancake topping choices

Brits are taking their pancake game to new heights, with unconventional toppings ranging from baked beans to tartare sauce.

Whether it’s swapping out syrup for a drizzle of sweet chilli or pairing strawberries with cream cheese, pancakes have become a playground for culinary creativity.

A recent survey of 2,000 UK residents revealed that over half see pancakes as an ideal a way to experitment with a variety of flavours.

As Shrove Tuesday approaches, on March 4th this year, eight out of ten Britons are gearing up to indulge in outlandish topping combinations, with some even daring to add salty sardines or fiery spices to their stacks.

Yet despite this burst of innovative topping trends, many still hold fast to time-honoured favourites like lemon and sugar (62%), golden syrup (40%) and chocolate spread (33%).

The great pancake debate also extends to texture and style, with a divide between those who prefer their pancakes thick and fluffy (35%) and those who swear by thin, crepe-like creations (31%).

In line with these adventurous tastes, Lyle’s Golden Syrup, championing the movement towards exciting “swavoury” options, has joined forces with Georgie Grasso, famed victor of the Great British Bake Off in 2024.

Pancake making remains a beloved tradition for many. Almost half of those polled stated they always try to observe Shrove Tuesday, and 59% remembered fond childhood memories of making pancakes with their families.
