Call the Midwife’s Dr Turner star teases ‘heartache’ as he confirms return of co-star

Call the Midwife star Stephen McGann has hinted at the thrilling comeback of a fan-favourite character in the season 14 finale.

The actor, famed for his portrayal of Doctor Patrick Turner in the beloved period drama, graced the set of This Morning on Wednesday (February 26) to chat about the ongoing series, which is captivating audiences on One.

In conversation with presenters Cat Deeley and , Stephen divulged details about the “beautiful” season 14 climax, set to grace screens this Sunday (March 2).

The finale promises to be a treat, with significant events for two main characters and an unexpected appearance from a cherished Call the Midwife personality.

“There are things that happen, which we’re not telling you, but there are things that happen around, including apart from all of those things in the finale, the return of a much-loved character,” Stephen revealed before announcing the return of Sister Hilda – played by Fenella Woolgar.

“One of the old sisters, Sister Hilda, played by the brilliant Fenella Woolgar, comes back into the series, so you will see her again. There’s a sense of things being rounded up beautifully, but there’s also, as you know with Call the Midwife, there’s drama there, too. There’s heartache, as well,” he added, reports .

Sister Hilda was initially assigned to Nonnatus House at the start of season eight and became a staple for four seasons.

Her departure to the Mother House during the 2022 Christmas special left many viewers longing for her return.

The season 14 finale will mark a poignant goodbye to midwife Nancy Corrigan and her fiance, Roger Noble, following Megan Cusack’s announcement of her departure from the show.

In another part of his interview this morning, Stephen revealed a heartwarming behind-the-scenes anecdote from Nancy and Roger’s wedding. His wife, Heidi Thomas, the series creator, drew inspiration from a personal experience when writing the upcoming scenes.

“What I can tell you, and I’m trying not to give spoilers. What I can say is there’s a sequence on the big day which involves rain pouring down,” Stephen shared.

“My son was married last year, and when we were arriving, it was absolutely in torrents of rain and I think Heidi drew a little inspiration from that.”
