Two-time world darts champion has revealed that he once considered a career as a strongman.
The 54-year-old, who won the in 2020 and 2022, was an avid gym-goer during his younger years and used to abide by a strenuous training regime. ‘Snakebite’ spent much of his youth tuned into World’s Strongest Man on TV before he realised he had more talent for throwing arrows than pumping iron.
“I used to watch The Strongest Man in the World as well [as darts], because I used to work out when I was younger,” Wright told the podcast.
“So it was either darts or strongman. That would have been great. I just used to come back from school, and I used to have a little gym in the garage. I just used to work out there and then go for three-mile runs. That’s when I was fit. There’s still time to transition!”
Wright joined the BDO in 1995 and moved over to the PDC nine years down the line. A late bloomer even by darts standards, the Scotland-born competitor’s most impressive results did not start filtering in until his late forties.
Alongside his two Ally Pally triumphs, Wright boasts wins at the Players Championship, the Masters, and the World Matchplay, as well as finishing runner-up in the 2017 edition of Premier League Darts.

The world No. 12 is still active on the PDC circuit and he will be back in action at the UK Open in Minehead later this week. Wright won the tournament back in 2017 and he will be keen to enjoy another deep run this time round, which would boost both his ranking and his chances of being selected in next year’s Premier League line-up.
Wright is venturing further into the twilight of his darts career, and he plans to return to his strongman roots in order to maximise his time on the oche.
“We’re just getting our gym and everything sorted [at home],” he explained. “In a couple of months, I’ll be getting in there and sorting myself out.
“Because I think Nathan Aspinall’s got a gym at home, he was saying as well to me, Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price. You’ve got to look after yourself if you want to be in the game longer.”
