Sam Allardyce has hailed decision to leave for in the January transfer window, comparing him to former team-mate Jesse Lingard. Rashford escaped after a 12-match exile enforced by over concerns with his attitude and application, and has started brightly at Villa Park.

The 27-year-old forward has looked like he’s enjoying his football again under Unai Emery, who reportedly pushed for his signature in the winter.

He came off the bench to provide two assists for Marco Asensio to power Villa’s second-half comeback win against last weekend.

Rashford could leave Amorim red-faced if he continues his impressive exploits while the Portuguese head coach’s fortunes contract.

United’s goal scoring woes look set to rumble on until next season due to a lack of firepower at his disposal after Amad’s campaign-ending injury.

Allardyce believes Rashford was in desperate need of inspiration elsewhere to recharge his career after slipping into a black hole at his boyhood club.

“He doesn’t fit into that type of system. Unless you play him as a right-wing back, he’s not fitting into Amorim’s system,” Allardyce explained on .

“He got to prove himself for the first time in a long time. As a kid, he had to prove himself by being good enough to break into United’s first team, now he has to prove himself to the Aston Villa players.

“He’s going out there with a new manager and new teammates and that’s got to inspire him, rather than languishing at Man United.”

The ex-England manager recalled Lingard’s United exit and how he looked like a completely new player under David Moyes’ guidance at West Ham United.

Lingard, now 32 and playing in South Korea, joined the Hammers on loan midway through the 2020/21 season and registered nine goals and four assists in 16 appearances.

Allardyce added: “It reminds me of Jesse Lingard, he was languishing at Man United and then Moyes rescued him.

“Lingard made the worst mistake ever not going with Moyes to West Ham. He went to Forest and just petered out again and now he’s somewhere obscure in South Korea.

“This was an England international player in his early 20s. Players moving is the biggest thing you can do.

“If you’re stagnating at your football club, pack your bag and move on, because your football career will soon be finished before you know it.”
