Netflix is getting ready to unveil its latest offering, Running Point, a hilarious behind-the-scenes look into the high-stakes world of American sports.
Drawing inspiration from the life of Jeanie Buss, owner and president of the Los Angeles Lakers, Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, a trailblazing female executive in the NBA.
When a scandal hits her family, Isla is thrust into the leadership role, taking over from her brother Cam (played by Justin Theroux). Determined to prove herself, she sets out to lead the team to championship victory.
However, she faces stiff resistance from her brothers Sandy (Drew Tarver) and Ness (Scott MacArthur), the board, and the wider sports community.
While Hudson is often associated with romantic comedies and recently appeared in the comedy murder-mystery sequel Glass Onion, she has a surprising connection to the world of basketball.

“I’ve been around basketball quite a bit,” she revealed, “thanks to my best friend from middle school and high school [Baron Davis], who became a professional NBA player.”
Her friendship with Davis, a two-time NBA all-star who played for top teams like the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, and New York Knicks, has given her a unique perspective on the sport.
“While basketball has always been one of my favourite sports, this show has deepened my appreciation for it.”
After retiring from basketball in 2012, Davis went on to become a studio analyst for the NBA on TNT.

In a stellar pairing in 2021, Kate Hudson joined forces with Davis and Glee sensation Darren Criss to promote Cann’s cranberry and sage cannabis tonic alongside her own King St. brand vodka in an advertisement campaign.
The Bride Wars star also divulged her close ties with the inspiration behind Running Point, none other than Lakers owner Jeanie Buss.
She expressed a deep-rooted connection to the character inspired by Buss: “Having known Jeanie since I was a teenager, I felt a unique connection to the character,” Hudson shared.

“Jeanie’s life and career in the male-dominated world of professional basketball are inspiring, and her willingness to let us explore a comedic version of that world was liberating.”
Unburdened by the demands of proving herself fit for the part, unlike her on-screen persona Isla, Hudson effortlessly secures her place thanks to her impressive stature and firm connections within the basketball elite.
Running Point premieres Thursday, 27th February on .
