The real reason Meghan Markle copied Diana’s iconic fashion look

Fans were quick to taste in fashion as it appeared the Duchess attempted to recreate her late mother-in-law’s iconic fashion style by sporting a Northwestern University sweater in her latest video.

The Duchess of Sussex took to social media and filmed herself walking around her garden in Montecito wearing a purple Northwestern jumper, to share a snippet of her day with her 2.1 million followers.

The Northwestern jumper Meghan wears in the video is almost identical to Princess Diana’s, which she wore regularly in public in 1996—the year before her death.

, as it is the place she graduated from in 2003, with a double major in theatre and international studies.

In 2014, she made her first visit back to the university. Meghan had been promoting the show she was in, Suits, and told North by magazine: “It’s surreal being back because I haven’t been back since I graduated, and as I am walking around I remember things like the schlep of getting to South Campus from up north. The 24-hour Burger King also definitely helped me put on the Freshman Fifteen.”

noted that Diana, however, had received her Northwestern top as a souvenir during her visit to the university in June in 1996. The University of Northwestern gifted Diana the jumper after she visited their Evanston campus in 1995. This was to raise money for the College’s Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center.

The late Princess was later photographed wearing the sweatshirt outside the Chelsea Harbour Club in London, pairing it with white biker shorts and trainers.

One fan commented: “After seeing Meghan in the exact same jumper Diana once wore, I can’t help but think it’s only a matter of time before she rocks that iconic red sweater with sheep.”

Another on X wrote: “Tbf, Meghan did go to Northwestern. This is a cool nod.”

Meghan released a series of stories on her post, and captioned one video: “A small break from work to soak in the weekend sunshine.” In the background, one of her children was heard saying: “Mummy, I can do it if you want me to.”

Meghan then shows her children, either Prince Archie, five, or Princess Lilibet, three, how to water plants with a hose. Meanwhile, Harry could also be heard laughing while his wife made a fizzy cocktail using a homegrown orange she picked from the grounds.

It has been a busy time for the Duchess, with her new series With Love, Meghan and her lifestyle brand As Ever both set to launch soon.
