Some people with allergies are only sensitive to one type of tree nut, which include almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashew nuts and pecans.

Peanuts are classed as a legume in the same plant family as peas, beans and lentils.

Peanut and tree nut allergies are the most common known foods to cause serious anaphylaxis reactions.

Hazelnut allergies are also often the result of a secondary nut allergy linked to hay fever, which is caused by cross-reactivity.
