In the ongoing battle for supermarket supremacy, shoppers are constantly on the lookout for the best deals on essential items.
Tracking prices for over three years, including items like meat, milk, and baked beans, Manchester Evening News that this time last year, Asda was the priciest in their ranking, but after recent price cuts, it has become the leader this week.
This week, has been crowned the cheapest supermarket for essential items with a basket costing £12.57 this week, surpassing both and Lidl, reports the .
The prices of the same eight items — a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, baked beans, chicken, and mince — were compared across Aldi, Tesco, Lidl, Asda, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s.

Sainsbury’s came in at £12.94, while Morrisons totaled £13.07 and Tesco, was the priciest this week with a basket of the same items costing £13.28.
Aldi has consistently argued that the comparison overlooks product quality, noting that its Diplomat Red Label tea bags and coffee, for example, are of “higher quality” than those used in the comparison.
Additionally, in terms of meat, the comparison includes the cheapest mince packs from each store. Aldi, Lidl, and Morrisons sell 25% fat mince, while other supermarkets offer 20% fat, which is seen as being of better quality.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “Our promise to customers is that they will make significant savings every time they shop with Aldi, which is why we’ve been named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for four years running. Which? also named Aldi the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket every month in 2024.”

Asda also reportedly disagrees with the comparison, claiming it doesn’t reflect their broader, affordable product range and recent Rollback prices.
An Asda spokesperson said: “We are refocussing on what Asda is famous for by helping hard-working families save money and providing a good experience for customers however they shop with us.
“We recently announced a return of our Rollback proposition and Asda price, reducing prices on 4,000 products by an average of 25% as part of our plan to lower prices across our entire range and make Asda the cheapest traditional supermarket.”
