Whether it’s a busy day at work or a night out, ensuring your perfume lasts longer and leaves a can seem like a fantasy.

However, it is achievable if you add an extra step to your grooming routine that can easily prolong the life of your fragrance.

Maria Mukaranda, editor at Cosmetify, explained that the key to making your last is using petroleum jelly or Vaseline, which is sold for only £1.25 at retailers like Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

“Petroleum jellies such as Vaseline create a barrier between your skin and the , preventing it from absorbing into the skin too quickly,” said Maria.

She added: “This slows down the evaporation process of the perfume, making it last longer.”

The oils in the petroleum jelly and the perfume also bind together, creating a long-lasting effect that will keep your fragrance fresh for hours.

The process couldn’t be easier: apply a thin layer of Vaseline to your wrists and neck before spritzing your favourite scent.

This affordable step locks in the fragrance and enhances its staying power.

“If you don’t have petroleum jelly to hand, similar results can also be achieved through moisturiser,” added Maria.

You can also get the most out of your perfume by avoiding a common mistake when applying it: rubbing your wrists together.

While it may feel instinctual, and most people have been doing it all their lives, this practice diminishes the potency of your fragrance.

“Rubbing fragrance into your skin can break down the scent, making it less strong and long-lasting,” explained Maria.

She recommends spraying perfume from about 30 cm away to maximise the effect, allowing it to settle into the skin naturally.

For women who want to leave a scent trail as they walk, there’s also a clever trick involving your hairbrush.

Instead of spraying perfume directly onto your hair, which can cause damage and dryness, Maria suggests spraying a couple of spritzes onto your brush.

“To create a scent trail as you walk by, simply brush your hair with the perfume-coated brush,” she advised. This way, your hair will carry the fragrance without the risk of frizz or split ends.
