Ish said: “Whether you’ve made a bulb lasagna or done your own collection of individual spring bulbs, they all need relatively the same thing. The first thing being adequate amount of drainage.

“If you’ve got yourself a trough like this, you can just see in the bottom I’ve drilled quite a few drainage holes, which means that the soil won’t get too moist and rot away the bulb. As a result, they’ll do a lot better.

“The next thing we want to look at is position. Now most spring bulbs absolutely love full or partial sun, so make sure they’re in a nice, sunny spot. Even if it is as cloudy as this, a good amount of light is still fantastic to get these started.”

He also told people not to worry about feeding the plants. As long as they’re planted in good compost, you should be able to grow a healthy flower. Let flowers die off if they need to, so others can grow in their place.
