Chris Sutton has compounded ’ misery by pointing out that he called for Philippe Clement to be sacked four months ago. The Scottish Premiership side finally axed the Belgian after a dismal 2-0 defeat by St. Mirren.

Clement to apply pressure on in the league. Saturday’s home loss left Gers a staggering 13 points behind the league leaders with only 11 matches to be played.

Former Celtic striker-turned-pundit Sutton had called for Clement to depart on October 30, after Rangers were beaten 2-1 by Aberdeen. They decided to stick with the 50-year-old but have now parted ways.

Sutton also alluded to the fact that Rangers have now sacked seven managers during the two reigns of Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

“On October 30 after the defeat to Aberdeen, myself and Kris Boyd said it was time for Big Phil to go. The Rangers board didn’t listen…He seemed to be a decent man but didn’t understand the demands of football in Glasgow. Another Rangers manager seen off by Brendan Rodgers…”

Clement apologised to Rangers fans and said he would attempt to find a solution after their fifth league defeat of the season. However, he will not get the chance to

“I can say only sorry, and apologise for me and the team because this is not what Rangers teams need to show on the pitch. We all know this was by far below the standards that we all expect,” Clement said.

“I’m always fighting until the end. I wanted to be on the field to fight, I cannot do that, so my task is to do it from the sidelines, and to get the team in the right mindset. That was not the case today, so I need to find the solution for that.”

Clement’s sacking was announced on Sunday in a brief statement. It read: “Rangers Football Club can confirm it has tonight parted company with men’s first-team manager, Philippe Clement.

“The club would like to put on record their sincere thanks to Philippe for his hard work and dedication during his spell in charge. A further update from the club will follow in due course.”

Clement had been appointed in October 2023 and won the Scottish League Cup in his first season. Despite reaching the Europa League knockout phase, his second season has been punctuated by inconsistency.
