Dragons’ Den rejects now worth whopping £4.5million after flopping on BBC show

This season of introduced viewers to Lucie Macleod. She appeared on the show hoping to gain a major investment to further her business, Hair Syrup.

The Welsh beauty explained that she’d be struggling with the health of her hair, and after big-name brands didn’t seem to work, she began formulating her own ingredients in her “uni kitchen.”

After perfecting a pre-wash formula that renewed her hair, she began making products for her loved ones, who were stunned by her own transformation.

However, it wasn’t until May 2020, during lockdown, that Lucie began sharing her haircare routine on . As her views unexpectedly increased, she was inundated with people wanting to part ways with their cash to buy her products.

Although Hair Syrup turned over an incredible £4.5million with a post-tax net profit of £1.4million last year, Lucie told the Dragons she needed their investment for mass globalisation.

Lucie asked the potential investors for £190,000 in exchange for a 3% equity stake in her company, and although she walked away without it, Hair Syrup has continued to become a success.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the entrepreneur revealed that her episode was, in fact, filmed in July 2024 and admitted she “probably wouldn’t have organically applied” if the show had not reached out.

Lucie shared that since her pitch, Hair Syrup has launched in retailers Boots in-store and online, and Anthropologie.

Last month, she was named Young Business Person of the Year and Hair Syprup was “highly commended” in the Must-Have Haircare Treatments at the 2024 Beauty Awards.

Lucie returned to Warwick University, where she studied to give a talk, spoke at the DO Lectures and became a panellist speaker at GS1.

The Hair Syrup team have also grown rapidly, with 14 staff members, the relocation of their warehouse, which is four times the size of their first and has completed over 250,000 orders.

Reflecting on her time on the series, Lucie shared, “I obviously was hoping for a deal, and I was open-minded about it because I didn’t know if it would lead to anything.

“I would’ve liked to have had offers, ideally from Steven [Bartlett] and Peter [Jones].

“If I could just choose one it probably would’ve been Peter just because I felt like he just knows.”
