Before kick-off at the Etihad Stadium, former Aston Villa and England striker Collymore twisted the knife into with a brutal comment about Arteta on X (formerly Twitter).

He was responding to a fan, who had asked him: “At what point did you think AFC could no longer win the league, please?” Collymore, never one to mince his words, replied: “When they gave Arteta the job,” before deleting his post shortly afterwards.

Arteta has long been accused of lacking the minerals to lead to Premier League glory for the first time since 2004.

The Gunners have splashed nearly £600million in the transfer market since the Spaniard took over from Unai Emery in 2019. In spite of their lavish spending, Arteta has only managed to win a single FA Cup with a team largely inherited from his predecessor.

He expressed his anger following ‘s defeat to West Ham, blaming himself for failing to maintain the required standards.

“I’m very disappointed, obviously very angry as well,” said Arteta. “We have to congratulate West Ham for the victory and the game that they played but I think [there was] a lot on our side we never got right.

“We have to be [angry]. I hope we are, very much, because we didn’t hit the levels today and I’m very much responsible, and I am very angry. It’s my responsibility for the team to play much better than it did today.

“We have to play much better, with much more quality, much more interaction. It’s not good enough, that’s on me. It was nowhere near the level that we need to win the Premier League.

“I think we have to look in the mirror of ourselves of what we can do better, what we have done and the will and the desire and the way we run and the way we want it, zero question about that. But at that level, this is not enough.

“You have to deliver and it has to be with a lot of quality to break a really good team down, to win many more games than we have done and to put actions that can end up in really threatening moments to win the games and today we haven’t done that.”
