New crisis for Spain tourist haters as China ‘abandons Maldives for Majorca’

Chinese is reaching new heights in as Asian flock to the popular island – despite furious protests throughout and Balearics.

Last year a whopping 647,801 Chinese tourists arrived in Spain, marking a huge 66.7% increase compared to 2023.

Japan also saw strong results, with 410,292 travellers, according to Idealista. In 2024, South Korea recorded 388,399 visitors to Spain.

Thanks to improved air connectivity and more streamlined visa processes, tourism from Asia rose by 14.2% compared to the previous year, according to the Spanish Statistical Office (INE).

Eva Youbin Chung, a South Korean blogger, says South Korean tourists have “their sights set on Majorca”.

She told the : “Majorca is the perfect destination for Koreans, especially couples, and the island is becoming more and more popular.

“They used to holiday in the Maldives or Mauritius, but now they have their sights set on Mallorca.”

Eva believes the Spanish island is the perfect honeymoon getaway for South Koreans looking for a dose of Mediterranean air.

Tourism from the United States in Majorca is also breaking records with 4.2 million American tourists visiting Spain, marking an 11.2% increase compared to 2023.

This sudden boom in tourism is believed to there now being 24 direct routes to the Spain from the US, matching pre- figures.

These routes connect 11 US cities with five Spanish cities.

This news will anger mass tourism haters in Majorca who believe the increasing number of holidaymakers are causing rising housing costs, overcrowding of public space and are to blame for plummeting living standards.

A major movement which organised several demonstrations against tourist overcrowding in is set to regroup and redouble its efforts amid forecasts of continued growth in the upcoming season.

The movement have criticised the continuation of policies that “only favour the liberalisation of land” and favour speculation and business in the context of a climate and ecological crisis as well as the foreseeable “faliure” of the Pact for Sustainability round tables.

The platform has called for a meeting to be held on Saturday (February 15) at the Escola Rural des Puig d’Alanar, in Manacor.
