Jet2 passengers warned of new baggage rules that could lead to fines

Passengers for have been urged to double check their luggage before heading to the airport as new rules are imposed.

The new rules could see a minimum charge of £12 at the airport gate if passengers fall foul of the new requirements, which wwill be officially imposed by Jet2 from 2025.

Jet2’s new rules will mean all passengers with the airline are only allowed one piece of free luggage on board that must be under 10kg.

This one-piece luggage’s size must also be within 56cm x 45cm x 25cm including its handles and wheels.

An extra piece of luggage is allowed, including either a purse or laptop bag, as long as it can be safely stowed under your seat.

Passengers taking any second pieces of luggage or a main bag that is deemed oversized could see a hefty fine when checking-in.

According to the budget airline’s website, non-compliant hand luggage won’t even see the inside of the cabin, but will rather be sent to the aircraft hold instead with fines being imposed too.

A hefty £36 charge could be imposed for any passenger’s luggage which exceeds 3kg over the limit.

“Any baggage that exceeds your total weight allowance will be carried subject to availability and at our discretion,” Jet2 warned.

They added: “You may also need to pay an excess baggage fee, which is £12 per kg”.

A Jet2 spokesperson further explained: “When pre-booking your bags, the charge per bag is variable depending on your destination, and on whether you make your booking through our website, call centre or at the airport.

“If you want to check in an additional item at the airport on the day of departure, you’ll need to pay a fee of £45 per item, plus any applicable excess baggage fees.”

When it comes to payment for these fines, the airline’s spokesperson added that debit or credit cards are accepted and that they “generally accept payment for additional baggage fees at the airport in local currency”.

“If you are planning to travel with excess baggage, please allow extra time to complete the check-in process,” they added.

Previously speaking with a Jet2 spokesperson further warned that all hand luggage is carried in the cabin at the airline’s discretion, adding that the airline does not “allow you to to drink any alcohol bought at the airport (or before) during the flight.”
