Accusations of of blanking his team-mate Samaje Perine were rubbished – as the running back confirmed what transpired between the pair. Super Bowl LIX began as the ultimate chance for the AFC franchise to make history as the only team in history to win three titles in a row but soon descended into a horror show in New Orleans.

The Chiefs were thoroughly dominated by the Philadelphia Eagles who claimed a 40-22 victory to exact revenge on the team who defeated them in the showpiece event two years prior. The talisman quarterback disappointed on Sunday with two interceptions as he also had to face accusations that he rejected a handshake from Perine at the end of the game.

A video of Mahomes shaking hands with his numerous members of the Chiefs’ offense went viral as he appeared to dismiss his team-mate in order to hug Travis Kelce. Fans were obviously left confused as to whether something had go on between the pair but Perine put the matter to bed, insisting there was no controversy that occurred.

The 29-year-old responded to a clip of the video as he wrote: “Lol I actually stood up to untie my pants string, no one blamed anybody. It’s not that deep.” Following the game, a disappointed Mahomes took responsibilty for his lacklustre peformance when speaking to the media.

“They played better than us from start to finish,” the three-time Super Bowl champion said. “We didn’t start how we wanted to.  The turnovers hurt. I take all the blame for that. Those turnovers swing the moment of the game and they capitalized on them.  They scored on one and got a touchdown immediately after another. That’s 14 points I gave them.

“It’s hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl. I didn’t play to my standard and I have to be better next time.” The 29-year-old also thanked Chiefs fans’ for their fervent support and promised to make yet another run to the Super Bowl in what would be a fourth consecutive appearance in the NFL’s finale – a feat that hasn’t been done since the Buffalo Bills from 1991 to 1994.

“Appreciate all the love and support from Chiefs Kingdom. I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back.”
