Warning issued as police start dishing out £167 fines at one of Spain’s busiest airports

Police in started a major crackdown on illegal parking at the airport over the past weekend.

In some cases, Drivers were issued fines of up to €200 (£167), while others were given warnings.

Officers want to stop motorists from parking on access roads close to the  while waiting for arriving passengers.

Drivers have been told they can park for free in the AirPort Express area for up to 15 minutes.

“Drivers can park up, free of charge, in the Airport Express area and in many parts it is strictly illegal,” police said in a statement.

“It is always best to check with the airline or the when going to collect a passenger to establish whether the flight is on time; this will avoid long waits,” they added. “Our officers saw people parking up anywhere and they were told to move on.”

Last year, just over 33 million passengers passed through the , a 7% increase on 2023.

Of the total number of commercial passengers, around nine million travelled on domestic routes, a 5% rise.
