rolled out its latest iOS update on Monday (February 10) – and while that normally spells excitement for users, for many it left a sour taste.
The giant introduced version 18.3.1, which they said has been designed to fix bugs and resolve security issues ahead of a more prominent update in the coming weeks. 18.3.1 installed automatically on most devices during the night of its launch and since then, users have pointed out a common issue.
Thankfully there is a quick fix, however, as user Charli points out in a video. “If anyone has updated their phones to the new iOS, the emails have all changed around – I didn’t like it at all,” she said. “They’re not just listed, they’re in different categories and I just couldn’t get used to it.”
Charli continued, explaining there’s a simple way of returning the email app to it’s previous appearance. “Basically there are three little dots in the right hand corner and if you click on those you will see ‘Categories’ is ticked. But you can change that to ‘List View’ to return it to normal. It’s so much better.”
Relieved, Charli said her “hack” has resolved the problem of not knowing where each individual email was going. “It was too many boxes and different things going on. Obviously the font will still be a little bit different, but the actual layout of your emails is the same and they come up in the order of when you received them.”

Charli closed: “It’s dead simple, so if you don’t like the new look like me, just do it – it works so much better for me. Hope this helps!”
The video clearly struck a chord with her followers, with almost 300,000 tuning in for the advice, 1,000 of whom took to the comments section to respond. “You legend!” one person declared. “That was causing me so much stress. Thank you.”
A second praised: “Thank you so very much for sharing this information. I didn’t like it myself, it was so irritating. I don’t know why they touch the settings. They should just leave things as they are.”
A grateful third added: “Oh my goodness, thank goodness I found this page, it’s been driving me nuts! The other thing for me is that it no longer notifies me when I receive an email. I only know if I open the app and see them.” Whilst a fourth wrote: “Amazing, now changed back, thanks. I was thinking how this is weird, I was also not getting notifications so when I was clicking on my email I found I’d missed loads.”
Don’t miss… [TECH] [TV] [APPLE]
Apple has said very little about the update other than a brief statement on its support explaining the patch has been implemented to prevent hackers from accessing data on locked devices.
“A physical attack may disable USB Restricted Mode on a locked device,” the statement read. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.”
Apple has been contacted for more information.
