It’s almost time for bright and bold to come back into season and flourish. Popular for their versatility, the come in a wide range of colours, from bright yellows and oranges to deep reds, pinks, and even whites.

While their colours can brighten up any , tulip maintenance can be tricky. Plant expert at , Elise Harlock, has shared her top tips for keeping these flowers looking their very best and getting your money’s worth.

The expert explained that tulips are a springtime staple and are extremely popular throughout the season, but their pop of colour can be difficult to maintain. With her expert advice, you can make tulips last for weeks.

She said: “Tulips are thirsty flowers, which can be to their detriment as their heads can begin to droop. To avoid this, you can use a simple toothpick to put a small hole in the stem just below the flower head. This allows air to escape when the flower drinks, helping it stay upright for longer.”

Elise also recommends changing the bouquet’s water every two to three days in order to keep it fresh.

She suggests that simply adding ice cubes and a teaspoon of sugar can give your tulips an “extra boost”. “Flowers thrive in cold water, and sugar provides much-needed nutrients,” Elise says.

It’s important that when picking your bunch, you look out for ones where all the tulips are closed to ensure they last for longer.

Before you even put them into water, the flower expert suggests using a knife to diagonally slice the stems on a 45-degree angle. By doing this, you will maximise the surface area to absorb more water.

“You should also remove any leaves below the water line, as these will die and cause bacteria to build up. When positioning tulips, keep them away from draughty areas such as windows and vents, or radiators where they might dry out quickly,” Elise explains.

It’s recommended that you also check the bottom of the stems every couple of days and give them a quick trim when they start to look soggy. A couple of inches of water is best for tulips to be sure they don’t overdrink.

Elise said: “These steps can help you get the maximum benefit from your beautiful bouquet of tulips and enjoy them for longer.”
