That’s why Gordon Wallis, a Renewable Heating Specialist at Your NRG, has now given homeowners a heads-up that the optimal date to turn off their heating is just around the corner.
Wallis advised that the best time to switch off your is when the clocks go forward for British Summer Time, which this year falls on March 30.

“This transition to British Summer Time often signals the start of warmer days, reducing the need for central heating.”
However, Wallis stressed the importance of gradual adjustments rather than abruptly turning off the heating.
He recommended lowering the thermostat by 1°C each week as temperatures improve, which can save up to 10 percent on heating costs for every degree lowered.

“Rather than turning your heating off all at once, I suggest gradually lowering your thermostat. Not only does this help ease the transition to warmer weather, but it can also reduce your heating costs,” he advised.
For those using heating oil, timing is equally important, so Wallis suggests aligning your usage with milder weather to avoid running low during colder periods when prices can peak.
“If you use heating oil, it’s worth planning your usage to coincide with milder weather. By the time spring arrives, you can reduce or turn off your heating, which not only conserves your supply but also saves on the cost of topping up,” he explained.
While the savings are significant, Wallis also cautioned against turning off heating too soon.
“It’s important to remember that turning off your heating too early can result in problems like damp, mould, and even frozen pipes,” he warned.
These issues could lead to costly repairs, making it essential to maintain a consistent, safe temperature in your home until temperatures reliably rise.
