Bargain Hunt’s Eric Knowles opens up about rarely-mentioned brother in hilarious quip

Bargain Hunt is back on BBC One, with Eric Knowles offering his advice to amateur hunters. The antiquarian, who specialises in ceramics and glass, has worked on Antiques Roadshow and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.

The 71-year-old has previously opened up about his personal life, following the devastating loss of his son, Seb. Seb was killed in a road accident in May 2015.

He is married to his wife, Anita, for many years and has spoken about her before, but he rarely gives updates about his brother, Brian.

On the Beyond the Title podcast, Eric joked about how he was busy working in order to pay his wife’s hairdressing bills, when he started to open up about his wider family.

“What about your hairdresser?” He was asked. “My hairdresser is a lovely guy, he’s in North London, he is Greek Cypriot and he’s called Andy. He’s very possessive about my hair.”

He went on to impersonate his hairdresser: “‘Eric, I have the television on in my shop, you come on and I say to my customers, ‘Look, that is my hair!’ Then I see you the next day on another programme and you have a quiff, and I say to my customers, ‘That is my hair, but I have not given him that quiff, somebody has been touching my hair’.'”

The star went on to say, “I’m just glad it’s still there”, to which host Josh Barry replied: “I wish I had your hair.”

Eric was flattered before saying: “My brother is younger than me, and he’s the same as you, so I feel guilty when I meet my brother.

“‘Hi Brian, lovely to see you’…anyway c’est la vie.”

Eric previously opened up to the Lancashire Telegraph about his childhood and how he used to watch Antiques Roadshow’s forerunner, Going For A Song, with his family.

Eric and his brother were instructed by their dad to write down their guesses for values of the items before the experts announced their verdicts, and whoever lost ended up doing the washing up.

Eric, who was a specialist in the decorative arts department at Bonhams & Brooks in Knightsbridge, London, was always interested in history as a child.

He discovered the value of decorative items after starting work for an American shipping company, realising treasures his parents had started collecting were not “junk”, as he had once thought.

Bargain Hunt airs on One on weekdays at 12.15pm
