A popular tourist town in has introduced a resident-only traffic zone,
Soller council introduced the change as part of an experimental low emission zone, which covers a large part of the urban town on the northwestern coast of Majorca.
Non-registered vehicles such as hire cars won’t be permitted in the centre, and drivers will instead have to park and walk in.
Registered vehicles, such as those of residents, will be able to roam freely within the zone, which includes 12 main streets.

According to the councillor for mobility, Pep Porcel, it aims to ensure visitors arriving by car “leave them parked in the car parks which will soon be set up next to the Desvío road”.

One regular visitor to Soller said: “Providing that there is parking I don’t think that there will be a problem, but if there is no parking then it could be a nightmare.”
The new zone includes 12 streets, framed by Isabel II, Sant Jaume-Pere Serra, camino del Murterar, Andreu Coll, Cetre and the Desvío road.
Calle Cetre will act as the main entrance for vehicles and Calle Isabel II will be the main exit, and many of the affected streets will have to change the direction of traffic.
In September last year, in Soller aired concerns about the parking and traffic situation on C. Cetre, where the health centre and its car park are located.
On the SOS Soller citizens’ platform, staff said “it is often very difficult for us to exit the car park with the mobile PAC during emergencies”.

They noted “even the ambulance, despite using its siren, frequently struggles to get out,” which they believed could potentially compromise “the health of our community”.
It follows a run of last year in Mallorca, as residents made a stand against the high numbers of tourists coming to their hometowns.
