A stunning station is held up as one of the UK’s most beautiful transport hubs, and has its own bar.
Wemyss Bay Station, serves the village of that shares its name in Inverclyde, , opened in 1865, and is known for its curved iron and glass roof which allows natural light to stream in.
According to the Railway Heritage Trust, The Caledonian Railway, an intercity railway company, rebuilt the original in 1903, with the structure designed by Scottish architect James Miller.
The Category A listed building is home to a community garden and a bookshop that boasts a “wide selection of donated secondhand books, CDs, DVDs and vinyl records,” according to local group Friends of Wemyss Bay Station.
It even has a cafe and tiny and popular one-room within the concourse.

Last year it was also named 48th in the annual World Cup of Stations competition, out of 2,500 stations, with Maghull Station in Liverpool finishing top, as per the outlet.
However, it won the previous year, thanks to its “great volunteers work in developing a vibrant and colourful community garden as well as opening the Station Bookshop”.
It also won Station of the Year at the National Rail Awards, in 2024.
One reviewer wrote in February 2023: “Beautiful Railway Station even if you’re not a railway fanatic! The added bonus if it being right beside the ferry terminal adds to the fun.
“We visited on a chilly day and had an excellent coffee and cake in the Station cafe (there’s also a bar). Inexpensive trip out from Glasgow for an afternoon,” they added.
Another who visited in October last year hailed it as one of “the hidden gems on the national network”.
“The architecture of this quiet station is stunning,” they added. “Sweeping curves and canopies. Connects with trains to Glasgow and ferries to the isles. Add in the cafe and bookshop and it is worth a visit in itself.”
