The peony has tissue-like petals, which make perfect for bouquets. I find planting and growing them as much fun as admiring the flowers.

The must have a peony patch, where the roots can take over, and flowers burst into action each springtime.

To plant peony bare roots, you must first pick a spot with moist but well-drained soil and full sun.

The roots need to be planted just under the surface with any buds showing; if they are planted too deep, they will fail to flower.

The depth is a few centimetres, with the buds just poking out of the ground.

:

The roots are hardy and can withstand temperatures of about minus 15 degrees.

This makes them ideal for the UK, as they can handle our wintertime temperatures with ease.

The first year, we could see two or three flowers, with displays becoming bigger and better as each year passes.

You can plant peony bare roots into pots, beds and borders. The same principle of planting them in a shallow trench applies.

Don’t miss… [UPDATE]

If planted in a pot, then ensure they are positioned in full sun from early springtime to when the flowers die off.

The roots will grow more established over the years and give more and more flowers.
