Lawn care expert warns against ‘most common’ mistake gardeners are making

February might seem like the perfect time to sit back and leave the grass in your lawn well alone, but when it comes to seasonal lawn care, you couldn’t be more wrong.

It’s true that doesn’t require the same kind of TLC during the harsh winter months as it does in summer, but that doesn’t automatically mean that there’s nothing to do and no care to give. In fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In the winter months, a lawn tends to enter a dormant phase and its growth halts. Often, or grows extremely slowly during this time, with progress only restarting once the weather gets warmer and spring / summer rolls back around.

That’s when avid gardening enthusiasts can usually return to looking after their beloved green spaces. 

One increasingly common mistake that can be seen amongst the is the assumption that lawns don’t need tending to during the harsh winter months.

Neglecting your garden during this time can, in fact, have adverse consequences and can cause significant damage to your lawn.

Green thumbers are now being warned by an expert against this common lawn care mistake.

Cheryl Harper, MD of Greensleeves Lawn Care, has cautioned against the common mistake of assuming that lawns don’t require any attention during winter.

She said: “One of the most common mistakes is assuming that lawns don’t need any attention during winter. While grass growth slows down, neglecting it completely can lead to a host of problems.

“For instance, letting leaves and debris pile up creates a damp environment that’s perfect for mould, fungi and pests.

“Walking on a frosty or waterlogged lawn is another major error – it compacts the soil and damages the grass blades, making it much harder for the lawn to recover when spring rolls around.

“Additionally, some people mistakenly stop mowing entirely – which can lead to overly long grass, increased moss growth and a less healthy lawn overall. 

“A little bit of care in winter can make a huge difference when warmer weather returns.”

Reiterating Cheryl’s expert advice, at Boston Seeds have also encouraged keeping on top of your monthly lawn care and maintenance if you want “a healthy, green lawn all year round”.

Mr Tom Clamp, head of technical at –a manufacturer of premium care products–has explained the challenges that winter months bring along with them for a lawn, as reported by . Mr Clamp shared: ” brings several challenges for , from frost damage to nutrient depletion.

“Left unchecked, these issues can weaken your grass, making it harder for your to recover in spring.”

A “few simple adjustments” will make a world of a difference and protect your over the months.
