Amedi’s origins trace back over 3,000 years, with influences from the Assyrians, Persians, and later the Kurdish dynasties.

The town also served as the capital of the Badinan Emirate, a powerful Kurdish principality that ruled the region until the 19th century.
Amedi’s most striking feature is its natural fortification. The town is built on a massive, flat-topped mountain, with steep cliffs acting as natural defences.
A single winding road provides access, making it an incredibly strategic location throughout history. This isolation has preserved much of its traditional architecture, with ancient stone houses, narrow alleyways, and historic sites scattered throughout.
One of the most remarkable landmarks is the Gate of Amedi, a grand stone entrance believed to be part of an ancient fortress.
The town also boasts the Great Mosque of Amedi, an important Islamic site, as well as remains of ancient churches and synagogues, reflecting its diverse past.
