Midsomer Murders stalwart Neil Dudgeon has candidly discussed potential successors for his iconic role, hinting that Jason Watkins might be an ideal candidate to don the detective’s hat if he were to retire.
Although Neil hasn’t signalled any intention to depart the beloved series, he did acknowledge Jason as a strong contender during a chat with Radio Times.
Jason, known for his part in ITV’s McDonald and Dodd’s alongside Tala Gouveia, also expressed enthusiasm about stepping into the Midsomer Murders universe.
Neil playfully remarked on his possible replacement: “Jason [Watkins], obviously, unless they needed to go for somebody, well, you’re quite a bit younger than me.
“You’ve been a detective, it’s in the lovely countryside. So that would be great. We’ve got two good options,” reports .

Since 2011, Neil has portrayed DCI John Barnaby, succeeding John Nettles in the role.
Discussing his potential exit from the show, Neil quipped: “I’m very happy in the countryside, it’s very nice. And no, I assume that at some point, I’ll get the hook,” adding that until then, he will continue working until he’s shown the door.
This revelation follows the cancellation of McDonald and Dodd’s by ITV after its fourth season failed to hit the mark with ratings, leading to its discontinuation, much to the disappointment of its dedicated viewers.
An ITV representative confirmed the show’s termination, citing insufficient ratings to justify another season. This prompted a wave of disappointment among fans, with one lamenting on social media: “Bitterly disappointed as this was a fabulous series.”

One fan shared the sentiment, saying: “That’s a shame. I really enjoyed it – and the locations in and around Bath were lovely. #McDonaldAndDodds.”
A third viewer chimed in: “So sad about this! SUCH a great series! No more #Chipsandbutter @TalaGv #McDonaldandDodds.”
Additionally, Neil revealed that filming for Midsomer Murders’ 25th series will commence in March, following a year-long hiatus. The cast will work on four new episodes starting next month.
Midsomer Murders is available to watch on ITVX.
