Antiques Roadshow expert’s famous co-star dad who also worked on programme

expert John Sandon has a very famous dad who co-starred with him in the programme.

Ceramics and glass expert John joined the show in 1985 after a career at Bonhams auction house in London. As well as using his expertise to help sellers on the show, he’s also the International Director of European Ceramics and Glass at the auctioneers where it all started.

He’s even joined excavations at the Royal Worcester factory, and penned numerous books on the subject.

It seems antiques might run in the family, as John’s dad Henry Sandon was also an Antiques Roadshow star.

Henry, who died in December 2023, joined the Roadshow in its second ever series back in 1979, and stayed a staple of the show for the next 40 years.

Henry also made an appearance on This is Your Life in 2002, with presenter – and fellow Antiques Roadshow star – Michael Aspel.

John’s mum, Henry’s wife, was Barbara Starkey. The pair were together for 56 years until Barbara’s death in 2013, and they welcomed three sons together.

Henry died at the age of 95 after suffering a stroke in a care home in Worcestershire. John said at the time: “To the millions who tuned in every Sunday evening to watch the Antiques Roadshow, Henry was like a favourite uncle, whose enthusiasm for even the humblest piece of chipped china was infectious.”

He added: “His joy when he discovered a rare Staffordshire pottery owl jug, nicknamed ‘Ozzie’, was a magic TV moment few will forget.”
