Once known as one of , the reputation of New York’s busiest airport has taken a massive hit.

is now known as one of the , with constant reports iof ssues taking place on site.

Whether losing luggage or a terminal succumbing to flooding, the travel hub’s reputation had completely fallen off a cliff.

However, it seems as though that might completely change, thanks to the $19 billion (approximately £15 billion) overhaul that is currently taking place and designed to ‘save’ its reputation.

Happily for travellers, JFK is set to be home to many new amenities, more spaces and brand-new terminals for the millions of passengers it handles every year.

The metropolitian area has the busiest airport system in the United States and the second-busiest in the world. It consists of seven airports and of those seven, the JFK International Airport is the busiest. In 2023, the airport handled a staggering 62.5m passengers.

Despite this, passengers who go through the airport and use its services often complain about its layout and outdated facilities, resulting in an immediate need for change to repair it’s damaged reputation.

The maze-like layout of the airport was one of the main issues the airport faced. Instead of the terminals being connected to a central area in the airport, JFK features six disconnected terminals, making it difficult for transfers to take place.

But according to one analysis, the airport is projected to have 100 million passengers by 2050, meaning something has to be done, and fast.

So what will happen? The terminals will be revamped and the road network as well as transit system between them will be improved.

The main part of the project is the brand new Terminal One which will measure 2.5 million square feet and feature 23 gates, making it the airport’s biggest centre for departures.

Costing $9.5 billion (around £7.6 billion), this awaited terminal is set to be completed in 2030 but a selection of gates will be open from as soon as next year.

As well as the new terminal one, the airport will also gain a new terminal six, a multi-level parking facility with around 2000 spaces, and a 122m pedestrian bridge.
