Real reason Mark Labbett stormed off The Chase and punched a wall

left fans reeling when he punched the set and stormed off the quiz after losing out to a contestant.

Presenter was left speechless during the incident, and viewers were caught between shock and claiming it was all an act put on to increase the drama.

Bradley commented at the time: “That just shows you how they take it,” as players Michael, Trish and Terry won the money – forcing Mark to storm off-set.

But Mark later confirmed that he was furious when the contestants took home £60,000 – and not because of the money. He explained that it was a behind-the-scenes rule that left him furious.

Mark explained to The Sun at the National Television Awards in 2017: “It’s one of those things, what you didn’t see… I got given a question right and then carried on with another question but then they stopped the tape and ran it back and watched it again and said, ‘oh no, you got it wrong’.

“And of course, as any sportsman would tell you, when you get a goal disallowed on a replay you take it personally. And it was better to hit that than hit Bradley.”

He added to Metro: “The team had done fantastically well and had scored 22 which makes them big favourites to win, at least 80%. So you really want to win those big games and to do so you need to answer FAST!

“With time running out I tumbled over an answer and said ‘Eddie Eagles Edwards’ which was originally accepted and moved onto the next question. The game was then stopped and that answer was disallowed. With the ensuing pushback it was all over.”

The Chase is looked over by independent body Beyond Dispute, which monitors questions and answers to ensure the game is played fairly.

It took the investigators “a few minutes and a lot of scrutiny of the replay” to decide whether to disallow the answer, and Mark says his fury was all real.

He added: “It was totally about pride. Pride is everything, money is irrelevant to me.”
