Two finalists have urged former rugby ace to stick with the NFL, despite currently being without a contract.

Rees-Zammit, who has represented the Wales and British & Irish Lions in the past, ditched rugby to pursue a career in American Football last year.

Entering the sport via the league’s International Player Pathway Program, he caught the eye of reigning Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs, who signed Rees-Zammit as a running back.

He failed to make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster for the 2024 season but was offered a reprieve when the Jacksonville Jaguars took a punt on the Glamorgan-born ace and placed him in their reserve squad.

However, Rees-Zammit failed to make an appearance and wasn’t offered a contract extension after the Jaguars’ 2024 season came to an end.

A return to rugby union has been touted, with Rees-Zammit reportedly mulling over his future during the NFL off-season.

But current Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, who also has a history in rugby, told Rees-Zammit he should instead stick with American Football.

Dave Taub, assistant head coach and special teams coordinator for the Chiefs also in with some words of encouragement, telling AFP: “I love him. I really like him. He was a hard worker. He didn’t have the base fundamentals that these guys have. They’ve been playing football since fourth grade. He was just starting. The football instincts, that’s where he kind of lacked.

“Athletic skills? He had them everywhere. Those little small intangibles that he didn’t have, it’s going to take time. I hope he doesn’t give up. I hope he keeps trying to achieve his goal of playing American football.

“These guys have been playing for years. Then you get thrown into that. There’s going to be a learning curve for him. Again, I hope he doesn’t give up. I think after two or three years, if it doesn’t click by then, time to go back to rugby.”

The Chiefs and the Eagles go head-to-head for the Vince Lombardi trophy on Sunday evening in New Orleans.

A victory for the Chiefs will see them become the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowl titles in a row.
