NCIS: Sydney has finally returned for more high-stakes missions in the second season of the CBS franchise’s latest spin-off.
Following the cancellations of NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawaii, the Australia-based task force is keeping the wheels turning away from the USA.
This instalment sees US NCIS agents Michelle Mackey (played by Olivia Swann) and DeShawn Jackson (Sean Sagar) working with the Australian Federal Police to solve military cases around the iconic city of Sydney.
Their new teammates include Constable Evie Cooper (Tuuli Narkle), forensic scientist Bluebird ‘Blue’ Gleeson (Mavournee Hazel) and forensic pathologist Roy Penrose (William McInnes).
Mackey is reluctantly partnered with Jim ‘JD’ Dempsey (Todd Lasance), who fans discovered recently separated from his wife at the end of the first season.
NCIS Sydney’s Mackey star ‘shuts down’ JD romance theory
With both of them single, many NCIS viewers are convinced love could be in the air if the series remains on air long enough for them to get together.
One fan predicted on just this week: “I know this might be an unpopular opinion but I think that if the relationship is [done right] it could be a very entertaining and fun coworkers to couple story.
“I think that a slow build with an emphasis on trust and friendship first would make this a unique and unrushed relationship. I think it would be more toned down and realistic than what we have seen so far on most shows.”
And someone else agreed: “The romantic relationship will have to be done right and a slow build will definitely work better.
“Especially since JD divorce seems recent (been a while since I watched so I may be wrong) and Mackey did just move/get stationed to a new country so adjustments are still happening.
JD is freshly single following a difficult divorce
“I just hope that the writers and producers do justice to the direction they take since both potential storylines have a lot of potential to be good.”
Unfortunately, Swann is keeping her lips sealed for now but didn’t indicate any seeds of their relationship will be sown in season two.
Speaking exclusively to Express Online, she confirmed: “Honestly, I’ve seen nothing.
“But it’s interesting to see the team kind of pair off into their crime groups so it’s always interesting to see who people want to put together.”
NCIS: Sydney could also throw a curveball with another same-sex pairing, following the fan-favourite coupling of Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson) and Lucy Tara (Yasmine Al-Bustami) in NCIS: Hawaii.
Olivia Swann sees DeShawn and Evie more like brother and sister
“I’ve actually seen more for Mackey and Blue to get together!” Swann revealed. “So, I have no idea. I guess we’ll see.”
As for another popular fan-pairing, Evie and DeShawn, Swann also isn’t so convinced.
“It’s interesting because I see them very much as brother and sister, so it’s so interesting what fans interpret from what they see,” she added.
“That’s the wonderful thing about shows like this, there are so many characters you can really see yourself in or recognise certain things and it’s all up to interpretation. Anything could happen basically.”
Several NCIS agents have gotten together over the course of the franchise’s two decades on screens, so there’s still plenty of potential to sparks to fly amongst the Sydney team.
NCIS: Sydney season 2 continues Fridays on Paramount+.
