Lloyds Bank has warned about an important four-digit code that customers should look out for.

A person contacted the bank over X after their suspicions were raised as they had received a message purportedly from the bank urging them to act. The message read: “Lloyds Bank has detected an attempted online transaction on your Debit Card at GymShark on 06/02/2025 at 11:66:55 for £108.55.

“For security reasons, this transaction was declined. If you recognize this transaction, please reply YES. If you do not, reply NO.”

Lloyds responded to caution the customer that this was a “scam” text. They pointed out some key elements of the message that indicate it is not real.

The group said: “This will be a scam. You can see they’ve used the incorrect spelling of ‘recognize’ and also any message we send similar to this will have the last four digits of your debit card as well.”

The bank said another telltale sign the message is bogus is the fact “the text is generic in its details so could apply to anyone”.

Scammers often send out messages like these, pretending to be a real organisation, in a bid to ensnare people into contacting them.

The fraudsters will then try and get the person to hand over personal details or financial information, which they can use to steal funds or commit other fraud.

If you get a suspicious message purportedly from your bank or another genuine organisation, it’s good practice to contact the group yourself to check what the situation is.

Many banks are signed up for the 159 service, meaning their customers can call this number to be directed to a legitimate helpline for their provider, should they get a suspicious call or message.
