The global fast food giant will change its UK menu in weeks as an exclusive milkshake flavour prepares to debut in March 2025.
Known as the ‘Shamrock shake’, the drink is already a staple item in US restaurants but has never been seen on home soil.
However, it’s only here briefly, so fans must act quickly to taste the iconic thick, mint-green shake.
As for its taste, the delicious Shamrock Shake features a peppermint-flavoured syrup blended with a creamy milkshake base.
It joins McDonald’s core lineup of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and banana milkshakes.

Eager milkshake fans will find the bright green delight in UK restaurants and drive-thrus from Wednesday, March 12. But it’s not here for long, with its final sales scheduled for Tuesday, March 25.
Every milkshake sale counts for more than just a satisfied customer, as McDonald’s confirmed that it will donate 20p from each Shamrock Shake sale to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK.
The chain is a founding and forever partner of the Charity, which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families with children in hospital.
McDonald’s customers in the US have been enjoying the minty-fresh shake for years, since 1970. The drink started as the “St. Patrick’s Day Green Milkshake,” created in 1967 by Connecticut McDonald’s owner and operator Hal Rosen.

It wasn’t until three years later, in 1970, that the corporation decided to debut the “Shamrock Shake” in select locations across the US.
The milkshake doesn’t have a permanent place on US menus, but it is making a return to McDonald’s restaurants across the pond too. One excited Shamrock fan from the US wrote on X: “…well I’m gonna have to work extra hard at the gym for the next month and a half.. because I cannot resist a Shamrock Shake.”
Another person said: “Shamrock Shake season is back and I’m lovin it McDonalds.” A third chimed: “…I don’t really eat Mickey d’s anymore but that shamrock shake is a tradition.”
Only now has the product earned a place on menus across the UK and Northern Ireland, but it’s not the first time McDonald’s has launched a limited-edition milkshake flavour.
Shamrock’s arrival follows the success of the sell-out purple Grimace Shake last year, which left McDonald’s menus in the UK on December 25, 2024.
