Bianca Andreescu has delayed her started to the 2025 season after being rushed into surgery.

The former US Open champion has not played a match since October and was set to return at the Merida Open later this month.

But Andreescu issued an update on her health as she announced that she would be delaying her comeback after undergoing an emergency appendectomy.

Andreescu has been dogged by injuries throughout her career. But a sudden health emergency has now forced the Canadian to delay her return to tennis.

The former world No. 4 was primed to start her season at the WTA 500 in Merida, taking place from February 24. But she is now set to spend a few more weeks on the sidelines after undergoing emergency surgery.

“Hey everyone. Quick life update – training was going so well and I was very excited for the @wtameridaopen to be my first tournament of the 2025 season,” Andreescu wrote on her story on Thursday.

“However, I unexpectedly start experiencing some sharp pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy.

“The surgery went smoothly, and I’m on the road to recovery. My plan is to be back on court for the clay season, stronger as ever.

“Thank you so much for all your support – can’t wait to get back to competing!”

It’s another unfortunate setback for Andreescu, who has been forced on the sidelines multiple times during her young career. The Canadian burst onto the scene when she won Indian Wells as an 18-year-old wildcard in 2019, beating four top-20 players.

But Andreescu got injured just a few weeks later and did not return until the French Open, where she pulled out after one match. She returned later that year at the WTA 1000 in Canada – her home tournament – and lifted the title.

That same summer, aged 19, she beat Serena Williams to win her maiden Grand Slam at the US Open.

The 24-year-old was forced to miss the start of the 2020 season due to injury and did not play for the entire year, as the tour was shut down for several months during the pandemic.

She took another lengthy injury break at the end of 2023, ending her season after and returning eight months later at the French Open.

Andreescu’s last match came at the WTA 500 in Tokyo last October, where she lost to in the quarter-final. She delayed her started to the 2025 season due to personal reasons, and now won’t be seen until the clay swing.
