The adage “It takes a village to raise a child” is not only a statement about family but also a reminder of the support we receive in pursuing our dreams — and Sterling K. Brown recently got a powerful reminder of this.
While making an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show” on Wednesday, Brown reflected on the journey that brought him from Stanford University to our movie screens and into our homes. He recounted how he initially attended Stanford as an economics major, believing that he had to make a “financial contribution” to his family.

“Acting was always this thing that I enjoyed, but I didn’t think it was a prudent thing to pursue” Brown said. Later, during his studies, he realized “money wasn’t that important.” He clarified that he didn’t mean his statement in a negative sense but rather that “happiness was more important than the money.”
“If you find something that you love, the money will come,” Brown said.
Barrymore then asked Brown if there was “something” at his college that “set that spark” for his passion.
“I had some wonderful mentors at this school,” Brown revealed, mentioning one in particular, his acting instructor Carolyn Hood, whom he goes back to visit every few years. This is when the conversation took an emotional turn, as Barrymore surprised Brown with a heartwarming message from Hood herself.
“We are so proud of you, Sterling, for all the beautiful and layered performances you continue to awe us with,” Hood said with a sense of pride and admiration. She expressed her gratitude for Brown’s visits to her classroom, which she said have inspired a new generation of actors.

After the message, Brown was moved to tears, jokingly stating it would “mess up” his makeup.
