“Do your research into average temperatures and pack accordingly. It’s also a good idea to check that local restaurants and attractions are open at that time of year and look out for facilities that will make it more special, such as an indoor or heated pool or a hot tub.”
Somar Villa’s top recommendation for a March getaway was Costa Adeje, Tenerife, which is one of the warmest destinations in Europe at this time of the year, so you’ll be able to enjoy sunny days by the pool.
And for those looking for something else to do, Siam Park – voted the world’s best water park for ten years running by TripAdvisor – is just nearby.
Slightly further afield is the natural wonder that is Mount Teideide volcano and the national park surrounding it. The park has stunning hiking trails and is a perfect stargazing spot at night.
There are two Portuguese regions that feature on Sharon’s list of recommendations – The Algarve and Costa Verde.
Both of these locations will be cooler than they will be in the height of summer and will be less touristy than during the school holidays if visiting in March.
Highlights of The Algarve include the charming historical towns of Silves and the alkaline thermal springs at Caldas de Monchique.
While visitors to Costa Verde can make a beeline to the region’s centuries-old vineyards or visit the small city of Esposende, which is a very popular destination for water sports enthusiasts.

In March, this area will be blissfully crowd-free, allowing you to easily visit the ancient ruins showcasing the town’s Roman past and enjoy hiking along the Roman roads, old footpaths and mule trails.
