Toby Keith’s family is toasting to the country superstar’s “life well lived” one year after his death.
On Feb. 5, the “As Good As I Once Was” singer’s official Instagram account shared a photo of him onstage and raising a red solo cup.
“We can’t believe it’s been a year since the world lost Toby. We have a hole in our heart and our lives. The love and support from the community that Toby created has left us all thankful and grateful,” the statement read. “It has and continues to honor Toby. We know he would be proud of the legacy he left behind.”
The statement continued, “Today we hope you will celebrate and listen to his music with us, where we know he is smiling down and raising his cup. A toast to a life well lived.”
Keith’s children also honored their late father with sweet and emotional posts about their time together.
Krystal Keith shared photos of her and the country star during the father-daughter dance at her wedding. The post also included him with her daughters and throwback snaps of them when she was little.
“It feels like yesterday we said goodbye and yet it somehow has also been the longest year without him. I can’t help but find gratitude in all the time we had because we did all of life as a family unit,” she wrote. “It’s hard to find a candid picture where he doesn’t have one of our babies in his arms. He was their favorite, and they were his.”
Krystal Keith wrote that her “littles miss their buddy big time but we all know we will see him again someday.”
“Until then, he will watch over us and walk beside us. Every sunset (and he LOOOOVED his sunsets) is a reminder that he wants us to live our best life and do good in the world,” she continued, adding, that is exactly what they will do.
His son, Stelen Keith Covel, also shared a candid video of his father strumming the guitar and singing “If I Was Jesus.”
“A whole year without my hero. Here’s to one day having more of these nights. Love you dad,” he captioned the video.
Toby Keith also helped raise his wife Tricia Lucus‘ daughter, Shelley Covel Rowland. Rowland is Lucus’ daughter from a previous relationship and the singer reportedly adopted her after they got married.
The “Red Solo Cup” crooner died Feb. 5, 2024. In June 2022, Toby Keith revealed that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer in fall 2021.
In the family’s announcement of his death, they shared that he “passed peacefully” and “he fought his fight with grace and courage.”
Just months before his death in September 2023, the artist received the Country Icon Award at the People’s Choice Country Awards.
“I feel pretty good,” Toby Keith told E! News at that time. “It’s a little bit of a roller coaster. You get good days and, you know, you’re up and down, up and gown. It’s always zero to 60 and 60 to zero but I feel good today.”
