Construction of a brand new airport is currently in the works at Long Thanh district in the Dong Nai Province, located 25 miles east of Ho Chi Minh City. The new airport will serve Ho Chi Minh City’s metropolitan area.

Currently, the Tan Son Nhat International Airport is the only airport in the metropolitan area. It is home to over 20 million people.

The airport is designed with a capcity to handle around 30 million passengers a year.

However, with the increasing growth of passengers, reported that the airport served a whopping 109 million passengers last year. 

Something had to be done to handle the growing Vietnam is experiencing, so the country commenced its biggest infrastructure project yet.

When built to the maximum designed capacity, the new airport will serve over 100 million passengers and five million tonnes of cargo. The $16 million (£13 million) mega project is considered as the most expensive project in Vietnam’s history. 

It was first approved by Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung in June 2011 and construction will be carried out in three phases, with the first divided into sub-phases and expected to be completed in 2026.

The airport will feature four terminals which have all been designed by a Korea-based architecture firm Heerim Architects.

The structure will reportedly be shaped like a lotus flower, Vietnam’s national flower. The design was selected as a result of feedback from the Vietnamese public as well as experts.

The terminals will be divided over four floors and each have capacity of 25 million passengers each year. Construction of Long Thanh International Airport started on January 5 2021, and three days in workers found multiple unexploded mortar shells once used during the Vietnam War.

While the first phase is scheduled to be completed by March 2023, the entire airport will be operational after the third and final phases is finished, which scheduled for after 2035.

Once that time comes, the huge airport boasting an area of over 25,000 acres will be the largest and busiest airport in Vietnam and one of the largest in the world.
