Weather reporter Carol Kirkwood made a swift exit of the Breakfast set after her comments had failed to land with hosts Jon Kay and who were left baffled.
The awkward discussion took place as Sally and Carol were busy discussing the lovely blue skies as Jon chirped in to confess: “It does remind you to take your coat out with you, I’ve left mine at home.”
“You haven’t. You’ve not got a coat with you,” shot back a stunned Sally as Jon confirmed: “I have, I’ve been lulled into a false sense of security with the slightly warmer weather.”
Not impressed, his co-star repeated: “You’ve left the house without a coat,” shaking her head she added: “Jon,” as he responded: “Hey, it’s February.” Sally jested: “I think this means we should just convince summer to arrive early.”
It was at this point that Carol interrupted the hosts with a Scottish saying of when it was considered ok to ditch warm clothing. She said: “You know what they say, ‘never cast a clout till May is out’.”

Carol followed up with: “Don’t take off your coat until the end of May,” as Sally blurted: “What!,” and began to laugh uncontrollably, causing the meteorologist to chuckle too.
There was an air of confusion as Sally probed: “Go on, what does that mean?” Now red faced, Carol glanced towards her watch, telling the host: “God, look at the time.”
Jon was equally baffled, asking: “Never what?” The weather reporter explained: “Never cast a clout or a cloth until May is out.” She added: “Some people think it is the month of May and others think it’s a May Flower tree.”

The two presenters were even more dumbfounded by her comments, even with the explanation as Sally covered her face, then stating: “What is going on?”
The message just wasn’t filtering through as Carol declared: “Look at the time, it was nice meeting you all,” and jokingly walked off set with a huge smile on her face. Jon couldn’t help but poke fun at the situation, telling her: “Get your coat.”
Sally and Jon were left baffled
The two hosts just could not stop laughing as they tried to restore some kind of normality on the programme. Sally urged viewers: “While we try and figure out what’s been going on let’s get the news, the travel and the weather.”
Sally then commented to Jon: “It’s about keeping your coat,” as Jon chuckled: “I’m going to go and get a clout. A new clout,” as his co-star demanded: “I want the summer to start now.”
Breakfast airs every day on One from 6am.
