UK seaside town gets £8m boost to completely transform abandoned building

An iconic empty building in the heart of is set to be transformed into a luxury hotel as part of a £26m project.

The former post office building on Abingdon Street is a Grade II-listed building but has been vacant since 2007.

A grant of £8million to explore how the building can be successfully transformed into a Hotel Indigo has been approved by Blackpool Council.

Blackpool Council cabinet member, Councillor Mark Smith, said the plans will create new jobs in the Lancashire resort while maintaining a famous building.

He said: “This beautiful listed building is in such a prominent position in the town centre and holds much nostalgia for residents. It’s essential we explore all opportunities to give it a new lease of life.

“We need to find a suitable use for this building and I am determined to seize the opportunity to bring it back into productive use.

“If the development is viable it will create new employment opportunities in the town whilst also maintaining one of Blackpool’ s many prized heritage assets.”

There are more than 150 Hotel Indigo hotels open across the globe.

The £8million grant funding agreement is with Ashall Hospitality who will explore whether the building is viable for a hotel.

The funding will be released in two stages, the council said.

It added the project has received funding through the Government’s Capital Regeneration Fund further to a successful bid application.

In 2022, Blackpool Council said a record 20m people visited the town.
