The drama of the January transfer window is finally over, with the majority of clubs taking the opportunity to strengthen their squads in the winter market.

Top-flight teams spent a combined £372.8million on players, representing more than a three-fold increase on last year when sides only spent £116.2m between them.

were the biggest spenders, shelling out more than £176m on six new players, while and were the only two clubs not to make any January signings.

Not every deal made headlines, though, with some of the more intriguing moves going under the radar.

Ander Herrera to Boca Juniors

Boca Juniors added some experience to their ranks by securing a move for Ander Herrera, who left Athletic Bilbao as a free agent.

The former playmaker signed a deal until 2026, reuniting with the likes of Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero and Edinson Cavani.

Upon completing his move to Boca, Herrera said: “As a fan, I’ve already enjoyed the passion of this club. Soon, I’ll have the honour of playing on this very pitch.”

Jefferson Montero to St Helens

Jefferson Montero, who is best known for representing Swansea City in the , completed a surprise move to ninth-tier St Helens.

The 35-year-old is used to playing in top leagues and World Cups but has opted to try his luck in the North West Counties Premier Division.

St Helens manager Michael Smith told : “He wanted to look further up the pyramid but we managed to convince him to come down and have a look and see what he thought.”

Rob Holding to Sheffield United

Rob Holding has endured a torrid time at Crystal Palace since joining from , playing just one game this season in the Carabao Cup.

He has not left Selhurst Park permanently but will spend the rest of the season in the Championship after joining Sheffield United on loan.

The deal was completed in the final hours of deadline day with the Blades leaving it late to boost their promotion push.

Michy Batshuayi to Frankfurt

Michy Batshuayi joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a permanent deal, filling the void left by Omar Marmoush’s move to .

The ex- marksman struggled to compete with the likes of Mauro Icardi, Victor Osimhen and Dries Mertens during his time at Galatasaray.

He was tentatively linked with a return to the but ended up moving to Germany, where he will be hoping to rediscover his best form.

Max Aarons to Valencia

Bournemouth defender Max Aarons became the latest British player to move to Spain, following in the footsteps of Mason Greenwood and Oli McBurnie.

He joined Valencia on loan until the end of the season, with the deal including an option for the La Liga giants to buy him in the summer.

Aarons will be tasked with helping to ensure Valencia’s top-flight survival with the club mired in the relegation zone as things stand.

Alvaro Morata to Galatasaray

Turkey continues to provide a home for ex- players with Alvaro Morata having joined Galatasaray on loan from AC Milan.

The former striker had started 13 league games for Milan this season, chipping in with five goals.

However, he would have found playing time hard to come by at the San Siro following the arrival of Santiago Gimenez from Feyenoord.

Wilfried Zaha to Charlotte

Wilfried Zaha became the latest big-name player to move to the MLS, joining Charlotte on loan from Galatasaray.

He will remain there until next January, with his new club having the option to extend the deal by another six months.

The move sees Zaha link up with several veterans including the likes of Tim Ream, Ashley Westwood and manager Dean Smith.

James Rodriguez to Club Leon

James Rodriguez’s nomadic career will continue in Mexico with the former Everton striker having signed a one-year deal with Club Leon.

He joined on a free transfer from Rayo Vallecano, who terminated his contract after he made just seven appearances all season.

Rodriguez demanded 14 bodyguards and a house to sweeten the deal, according to , as well as the promise to sign ‘better players’.

Sergio Ramos to Monterrey

Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos is reportedly close to joining Monterrey after undergoing a medical in Spain on Monday.

He will be looking forward to resuming his career in Mexico, having been without a club since parting ways with Sevilla last summer.

Ramos will celebrate his 39th birthday next month but is clearly not thinking about hanging up his boots just yet.
