Keir Starmer’s new EU negotiator backed Remainer plot for second referendum

Mr Thomas-Symonds will be helped in his new role by Michael Ellam, the senior official leading on EU talks in the Civil Service.

The PM is in Brussels today to attending a meeting of EU leaders – the first UK PM to do so since the country left.

Discussions are thought to centre around defence, but Sir Keir will likely also seek to speak to heads of state on the continent about trade.

The PM also meet NATO secretary general Mark Rutte. The US President has threatened the EU with tariffs.

He added: “The UK is out of line. But I’m sure that one, I think that one, can be worked out.”

Labour has vowed that the UK will not re-join the EU’s single market, nor the customs union. Sir Keir has also said he would not sign up to freedom of movement.
