For more than 24 hours, Barclays customers have been thrown into chaos as a significant outage struck the bank, leaving countless individuals locked out of their accounts. The outage began on Friday – payday for many people across the UK – with users unable to verify if wages had been deposited.
The disruption has led to a wave of discontent among clients, prompting them to express their grievances on social media platforms.
One exasperated customer remarked on X (formerly Twitter): “Barclays is down again. I think it’s time to switch.”
Barclays customers have been thrown into chaos following a major outage
Taking to X, in response to one user who said her household “has no access to money”, the UK Help account advised the customer to take two steps.
First, the Barclays account asked: “Are there any friends or family who can offer support?”
When she said she didn’t and criticised the reply as “so triggering”, the bank’s X account posted links to the Trussell Trust, a charity that runs food banks, and Citizens Advice, which offers help for a range of problems. Last year, their community of food banks distributed 3.1 million emergency food parcels.
One upset mother took to X that she was unable to buy milk for her baby due to the glitch.
She said: “My four-month-old is out of milk powder and screaming for a feed and I still haven’t been paid. I’ve been in tears for hours.”

In a new statement after complaints online, Barclays said: “We are proactively contacting vulnerable customers to offer dedicated help and support. Their calls are being prioritised on our telephony lines meaning their calls get answered first.
“Our ATMs are unaffected by this technical issue so customers can withdraw cash and use their cards to make payments.”
The bank has also warned customers on its website to “be vigilant” during the outage because “fraudsters often use times like this to send messages pretending to be Barclays”.
