Paranormal activity on the London Underground has long fascinated commuters ever since it was first constructed back in 1854.

This keen interest in potential ghosts, spirits and ghouls lurking down below has even seen a freedom of information (FOI) request launched by an unnamed person wanting to know more.

They asked (TfL) to publish “any reports of paranormal activity at Tube, DLR, Overground, Elizabeth Line and Tram locations made to TfL since January 1, 2022”.

The request was submitted on January 2 and asked for the name of the station nearest to any sightings, including “a copy of any internal staff logbooks/documents for ghost sightings at the ”.

Aldgate East station is synonymous with dark activities as it was the location where many murders took place at the hands of Jack the Ripper but the mysterious event was recorded elsewhere.

The request may seem bizarre, but a recent sighting on the Metropolitan line has made it more plausible.

In reply to the request, TfL’s senior FOI case officer, Gemma Jacob wrote: “I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

“The search returned 156 results, but only one of them related to paranormal activity.

“This related to a distressed 15-year-old boy at King’s Cross on the Metropolitan line in December 2023, who also mentioned that he had seen ghosts.”

Alongside this spooky event, Aldgate station’s supposed “paranormal activity” can be traced back more than 100 years.

As such, TfL searched its records for sightings of all spooky entities, including ghosts, spirits, ghouls, poltergeists and even banshees, which occurred on the London Underground.

Aldgate East station has long been hailed as one of the most haunted underground stations, with reports of phantom footsteps and ghostly apparitions sending chills down the spines of anyone around.

According to one TikToker @shiverparanormal, Aldgate East has so many stories of spirits and ghost sightings that there is even a staff logbook for it all which @shiverparanormal says it “sounds like quite a fun bit of admin.”

This includes the ghosts of three young Sullivan girls who tragically died in a fire while at home in Aldgate in 1896.

In 2000, a track worker was electrocuted but survived. His coworkers claimed to have witnessed an image of an elderly woman ghost who sat beside him while he lay injured.

The reports include seeing a bright figure spotted next to the man, stroking his hair right before he fell and is known as the “spectral lady”.

“The remainder of results were records talking about being in ‘good spirits’ (typically a customer or train driver after an incident) or spirit as in alcohol (customers who were intoxicated/carrying a bottle of spirit),” added Jacob.
