Former and ace Ryan Kent is reportedly on the verge of a move to Iran after being convinced by a bizarre law.

Kent, who was born in Oldham, came through the ranks at and broke into the senior set-up as a teenager.

He failed to establish himself at the Anfield outfit and spent the majority of his time contracted to out on loan.

Short stints at the likes of Coventry City, Freiburg and Bristol City followed, but it was at Rangers, initially on loan and then as a permanent signing, where Kent found his feet.

The attacker scored 33 goals and assisted a further 56 for the Scottish outfit during his 218 appearances across all competitions and was part of the side that reached the 2022 Europa League final.

His next move saw him join Turkish outfit Fenerbahce in the summer of 2023, but the Englishman would last just over a year in Istanbul, with his contract having been terminated last autumn.

A statement at the time of Kent’s departure from Fenerbahce read: “The contract of Ryan Kent, one of the players of the Professional Football A Team, has been mutually terminated.”

As a result, Kent is now a free agent, but his career could be about to take a strange twist if a move to Iranian side Persepolis materialises.

According to , Kent is under transfer interest from the Middle Eastern club, with former Fenerbahce manager Ismail Kartal in charge of Persepolis.

But it’s Iran’s reported stance on owning crocodiles as a pet that is said to have swayed Kent in favour of joining.

While it’s one of the stranger transfer rumours to have come out of the January window, the move would put to bed speculation surrounding a Rangers return.

Manager Philippe Clement has previously addressed the possibility of signing Kent, speaking last year: “Of course, I know the player, and I’ve known him a long time, because the moment he went to Rangers, I was in talks with him to get him to Brugge.

“But there was a better deal, I think, in Rangers, in that way, so he chose for that. So, I’ve known him a long time, but I’m not going into rumours about bringing players on.”

As Kent isn’t contracted to a team, Rangers would be able to sign him outside of the transfer window, which officially shuts for the season on Monday.
