are sadly unavoidable, as they accumulate dead skin cells, oils, and sweat from our bodies as we sleep – but that doesn’t mean they have to stay stained yellow.

Many of us are perhaps not washing our pillows as much as we probably should, despite studies claiming that unwashed pillowcases can harbour 17 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat.

However, not all pillows can be safely washed in a washing machine, especially those with delicate materials or special fillings, meaning it can be hard to know just what to do in order to get your pillows looking good as new.

That’s where Allen Civlak, cleaning expert and owner of , comes in with his 80p hack for removing stains from pillows.

His method uses two of the cheapest cleaning supplies on the market, which you may already have in your home.

Allen’s two ingredients are baking soda and vinegar – with the first of these costing around 50p for a 200g packet, while a 500ml bottle of vinegar will set you back just 29p.

Sharing his cleaning method, Allen said: “By using baking soda and vinegar, you can naturally clean and freshen your pillows, leaving them smelling clean and revitalised.”

Start by taking off any pillowcases, covers, or protectors and then give them a generous sprinkle of baking soda, ensuring that both sides are well-covered.

Meanwhile, mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, and then lightly spray the vinegar solution over the pillow. The reaction between baking soda and vinegar will help “break down odours and lift stains”.

Allow the pillows to sit with the baking soda and vinegar for at least 30 minutes, which is enough time for the ingredients to work on removing odours and freshening up the pillows.

Once 30 minutes is up, use a brush or vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to remove the baking soda and any loosened debris, ensuring the pillows are thoroughly cleaned.

If the weather allows, you can air dry the pillows in the sun, as sunlight has “natural disinfectant properties” and can help “eliminate lingering odours” – otherwise, place them on a clothes horse.

Give the pillows a good fluffing, regularly rotating them to ensure even cleaning and drying. Leave them to air out for a few hours before putting on fresh pillowcases and placing them back in your bed.
