The wine is aged and stored underwater
The beautiful city of which is known for its history, huge port and being a top cruise ship destination in the has added another reason as to why travellers around the world must visit.
The pretty Spanish city is now home to Europe’s largest underwater winery and according to Undersea, the company which constructed the cellar, it can hold a staggering five million bottles of wine.
Beatriz Sanchez del Alamo, Cartagena’s councillor for said: “Gastronomic tourism in Cartagena represents an exceptional opportunity to promote our rich wine tradition and offer visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
“The recent inauguration of the largest underwater winery in Europe, located in our city is a clear example of the innovative and attractive potential that this tourism segment has.”
Located on the island of Escombreras, have the chance to explore the tourist attraction seven kilometres (four miles) from the shore.

The winery is owned by Undersea
Visitors can go on a tour where they will be given a talk, that’s available in both Spanish and English, about the process of ageing and storing wine underwater.
Undersea also offer wine tasting sessions, where people can compare red and white wines that have been matured on land and under the sea.
Its website states: “The idea behind UNDERSEA is not just to offer the sale of ‘underwater wine’ and an underwater ageing service, but to offer an experience.
“It is about living a journey into the world of oenology, where you can enjoy everything from a private space on the seabed to age your own wine, to tasting these natural treasures, touring and learning about the origin and process of this phenomenon on board first hand.”

The underwater cellar is in Cartagena, Spain
And the incredible underwater cellar isn’t just for visitors to try out wines, Undersea also has space for other wineries to age their own wines, allowing winemakers to engage in a unique experience, experimenting with different aging methods and “enriching their wines with a distinctive and high-quality seal.”
If you’d like to experience the winery but the thought of being underwater makes you feel a bit uneasy, well the company also offers wine experiences on a boat.
That way you still get to enjoy the marine environment and get to see the attraction up close, however you get to enjoy it from the comfort of being above the sea whilst enjoying the taste of “exceptional” wines.
