Sputtering water, strange noises and visible stains on your shower head are common signs of a problem.

Areas with hard water are likely to notice their heads becoming blocked more often.

Most people resort to using chemicals to remove limescale from shower heads; however, these can be expensive and can even damage your fixtures.

Kerry Hale, a expert at shower brand told Express.co.uk that is the best product to use for removing limescale from shower heads.

However, the cleaning expert warned that malt vinegar should not be used as it could stain. Kerry shared her simple step-by-step method for removing limescale from shower heads using white vinegar.

She explained: “Remove the shower head from the hose. Be careful not to lose the rubber washer when you do, as this stops water from leaking at the joint.

“Cover the shower head in a bucket or plastic container with white vinegar. Leave it to soak in the vinegar for at least 30 minutes, preferably around an hour.

“Don’t leave brass shower heads in vinegar for longer than 30 minutes. Take the shower head out of the vinegar and rinse it with water.

“Remove any remaining limescale with an old toothbrush, paying particular attention to the nozzle.

“Rinse again with water and polish with a soft cloth. Reattach the hose and turn on the shower to flush out any remaining limescale.”

Distilled vinegar can be found in most local supermarkets. Tesco distilled vinegar costs 35p, while a litre of distilled white vinegar from Asda costs £1.09.

Shower heads need to be descaled once a month to remove both the limescale and any bacteria.
